Friend of Yellow Ribbon Quilt Project

A Mom whose son is a proud member of the 310th PSYOP has made Yellow Ribbon quilts and sent them to Afghanistan. Check out the newly added photos. How awesome is that? I am thrilled that more troops will be able to have a little bit of warm comfort from home. Keep watching the blog for updates. I will continue to post photos as soon as I receive them.

Quilts arriving in Afgahistan

The quilts have already started to arrive in Afghanistan. This is so exciting. The dream of comforting our soldiers with a warm quilt is finally coming true. We had a great group of people that worked very hard to make this happen. And now see the "proof". The pictures here are the first few soldiers proudly showing off their new quilts. Keep checking back, there will be more to come.

Latest photos of completed quilts

Here are the latest photos of the completed quilts for Yellow Ribbon Quilt Project 2009. I also could not resist including photos of the packed boxes ready for shipping. As you can see the quilts filled up the conference table in my office and the packed boxes filled up the back of my car. It was really awesome!

I will let you know as soon as I hear that the quilts have arrived in Afghanistan and what the soldiers have to say about them. The post office told me that the boxes should arrive in time for Christmas.

The Quilts Have Been Shipped

The Yellow Ribbon Quilts are on the way to Afghanistan. I took them to the post office today. Our quilters added personal notes to the soldiers for each of the quilts that was sent. When I wrote my notes, it was an awesome feeling. I thought about the guys and girls that will receive the quilts and the notes. I had a hard time thinking of a good way to express my sincere gratitude to these American Heroes. What we did for them does not even begin to compare with what they do for us everyday in a country very far from their homes and loved ones.

Please check back soon as I will be adding photos of the stacks of finished quilts. It was a very impressive site. I will also keep you posted when I hear that the quilts have arrived in Afghanistan.

This is an awesome project. I hope to hear from other quilters who will want to send Yellow Ribbon Quilts to friends or family or even total strangers serving in the war in Afghanistan or Iraq. If you or someone you know is interested in becoming involved, please send me an email at yellowribbonquiltproject@gmail.com. I will be happy to answer your questions and send the quilt pattern that we used.

I am truly honored to be a Military Mom. As many of you know, it is a very hard job, but one that makes me proud. Today I am so excited that I have my Marine son home from Camp Geiger for Thanksgiving. My stepson will not make it home from Afghanistan for the holidays. He will be coming home in February for his leave. I could not be more proud of my soldiers and of all the men and women that are serving this great country. I believe that America is the land of the free...because of the brave.

Yellow Ribbon Quilt Project Sew-in

We have had both of our sew-ins for the Yellow Ribbon Quilt Project 2009. There was a great turn out, both on Saturday during the day and on Monday evening. We got a lot done towards creating the quilts. We were so excited to have a visit from Nicole Dullaghan, who is helping me to coordinate this project with the troops. It was so exciting to meet her and she was so very appreciative of our efforts to provide quilts for the troops. Nicole told us that according to word from Afghanistan, it has started to get quite cold at night so the quilts will be very welcome.

Please take a few minutes to see the photos of the sew-in. There are pictures of the ladies that have spent many hours working on these wonderful quilts and photos of some of the quilts as well. Please continue to check back as more photos will be added when all of the quilts are completed and when we take them to the post office.

This is a very exciting project, one that I hope will be picked up by guilds all over the United States. As you know there are a lot of men and women from all branches of the United States military in Afghanistan. We want them all to know that the folks at home care about them and are praying for their safe return home.

The time is now

After much planning, the time is now...we will meet on Saturday November 14th 2009 at Highlands Presbyterian Church in Grayson Georgia to begin construction of the Yellow Ribbon Quilts. All of the donated fabric has been cut into the size that will be used in the quilts. Our quilters will bring sewing machines and all the necessary tools to create these wonderful quilts for our fighting men and women in Afghanistan. Our plan is to have the quilts ready to ship by the end of the month so that the troops will receive the quilts in time for Christmas.

There is still time to join our efforts. It would be really great if other quilt guilds or any group of quilters would join us and "adopt" a military unit as well. It is expected with new deployments, by the end of this year the number of US troops in Afghanistan will be up to a new high of 68,000. That being said there are plenty of soldiers that would love to receive a handmade quilt from home and know that we truly support their efforts and wish them a safe return home.

Check back soon for photos of the Yellow Ribbon Quilt Project sew-in and the quilts that we will create as our thank you to the troops.

I have had many inquiries about the project and quite a lot of interest in it. Be sure to join us on Saturday November 14th for the workshop at Highlands Presbyterian Church in Grayson Georgia. Check back here for photos of the quilts.

Fall Festival

This Saturday October 24th, there will be a Fall Festival at Highlands Presbyterian Church in Grayson, GA. The "prototype" of our first Yellow Ribbon Quilt will be available for you to see. The festival is a fundraiser for the church and will feature delicious barbeque. They have graciously agreed to allow our quilt guild to set up a table to sell tickets to the guild's current fundraiser which is a drawing for a very beautiful quilt. The Yellow Ribbon Quilt will also be on display along with information about the project. Be sure to stop by on Saturday between 11:00 am and 5:00 pm. Enjoy some barbeque, purchase raffle tickets for a stunning quilt and chat with us about the Yellow Ribbon Quilt Project. Look forward to seeing you there.

Quilt Workshop

A workshop has been scheduled to begin consruction on the Yellow Ribbon Quilt Project. The workshop will be held at Highlands Presbyterian Church in Grayson Georgia on Saturday November 14, 2009. The regular guild meeting on Monday night November 16th will also be a workshop. The plan is to have all quilts completed at that meeting so that they can be ready for shipping by the beginning of December. We received another donation of patriotic fabric from one of our Quilters In Stitches Guild members. All this fabric will look great in the beautiful patriotic quilts. We are very excited about this project and look forward to sending the completed quilts to the troops.

How it all began

Several events came together; pretty much simultaneously to give me the idea of making quilts for troops currently serving in the war. My stepson was sent to Afghanistan for his 3rd tour of duty and my son joined the United States Marine Corps. I made a quilt for my stepson and sent it to him in Southern Afghanistan. It made me think that the other men and women in his unit would enjoy receiving a quilt as well. Also about this time, I took over the post of Community Service Chairperson in my local quilt guild. All of these things came together in my head and I started looking for an existing project that we could join in to help provide quilts for active troops. I found several projects that provided quilts for wounded soldiers and for families of fallen soldiers. But, I did not find anything that was exactly what I wanted to do.
When I did not find a project to send quilts directly to active troops serving in Afghanistan or Iraq, I decided that there should be such a project and the Yellow Ribbon Quilt Project was born.
The first step was to make sure that the quilts would be accepted by the troops. As I said earlier, my stepson is in Afghanistan. The wife of his unit commander is acting as a liaison for family members. I contacted her and told her what I wanted to do. She in turn contacted her husband who was very excited about the project. After receiving the “go ahead”, I was off and running with this exciting project.
The next step was to find a quilt pattern. I remembered having a quilt pattern that I thought would be perfect for this project, but of course I could not find the pattern. I also had a quilt size in mind that I thought would work well for the troops…not too big and not too small. I was able to write a pattern using those dimensions and the same general directions that I remembered from the old pattern that I had lost. I then made the quilt, using the pattern I had written. It worked! Wow! I had never written a pattern, so I was very relieved to find that my dimensions actually worked, and the quilt was really nice and simple to make.
I told my employer about the project and my boss went right out the same day and bought all the patriotic print fabric that our local Hancock Fabrics store had in stock and donated it to our Quilt Guild for this project. With members donating solid red and blue fabrics, all of the quilts will be very patriotic!
I will be very excited when we ship our first box of quilts to Afghanistan. I truly hope the troops will enjoy them and know that we are thinking of them everyday and praying for their safe return home.
